Prominent figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Board Chairman of Asaase Broadcasting Company Ltd., Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has confirmed the temporary shutdown of Asaase Radio, a popular Accra-based station, following directives from the National Communications Authority (NCA).
In a Facebook post, Mr. Otchere-Darko revealed that the station, known for its vibrant programming and due to mark its fifth anniversary on Saturday, June 14, was forced to go off-air due to a delay in renewing its broadcasting licence.
“Yes, it’s true. Asaase Radio, which celebrates its 5th anniversary Saturday, has been shut down. The General Manager tells me it’s because the station was delayed in renewing its licence last year. The deadline was October, but it was only renewed in December 2024,” he stated.
The NCA’s directive comes as part of a broader enforcement campaign targeting 62 radio stations across the country found to be non-compliant with broadcasting regulations. According to the Authority, the move follows a recent audit meant to ensure all operators meet the required legal and technical standards for continued operation.
A statement released by the NCA on June 12 instructed several FM stations to cease operations immediately. The reasons cited include expired licences, failure to begin broadcasting within the permitted time frame, and unmet financial or technical obligations tied to their licences.
Asaase Radio’s unexpected silence is a major development, especially given its reputation as a fast-growing media outlet and a key player in Ghana’s broadcasting landscape. As stakeholders await a resolution, the situation underscores the NCA’s renewed commitment to regulatory compliance across the media space.
